About book Veiled Eyes (2000)

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. It was a compelling read and caused my to read late into the night. A young woman has been robbed of her car, then a pickpocket steals her wallet worth all her money and bus ticket to New Orleans where her friend awaits. She lost her job when the owners son assaults her and she fights back. So what is a penniless orphan to do? Why hitch a ride of course. Unfortunately her 6th sense that usually tells her when people are up to no good is taking the night off. So when the truck driver who gives her a ride offers her coffee from his thermos she takes it only to awake so time later handcuffed in the sleeper cab looking at trophy photos of all the other girls he has kidnapped and murdered she starts screaming. Then she starts hearing voices in her head. Its the voice of the man she has been dreaming of since she can remember. Thus begins the adventure.... and it gets more interesting and exciting from there as the orphan finds her roots and almost loses her life in the search for her family though finds the other half of her soul. I really hope the next in the series is as good. I find myself stuck in a rut sometimes with the genres I read. I branched out to this paranormal book but couldn't get into it.There are a group of people with similar colored eyes who can "speak" with each other telepathically. The story opens with a young girl who is hitch hiking her way to her friend's house in New Orleans. She uses her gift to help her decide which rides are safe for her to accept. One truck driver is not giving her any "signals" so to speak but she takes the chance for the ride she so desperately needs. Unfortunately the trucker turns out to be a serial rapist and killer. While tied up in the back she sends "signals" to a man she sees in her mind. This man lives in Louisiana and has always dreamed of her but doesn't know if she is real or not. Through their thoughts they are able to save her. This is just in the first few chapters. I didn't stick around to read the rest but abandoned it rather quickly. Part of it is the genre didn't interest me and the other part is the writing was a bit stilted and hard to keep up with.
