About book W Poszukiwaniu Króla (2011)

Just about every aspect of the story -- the plot and the two protagonists -- are developed only at a superficial level. However the author's effort is redeemed by the role he assigned to some of the minor characters: characters who just happen to be some of the more prominent members of the famous literary Inklings. It seems to me that (historical) fiction can be useful and enjoyable in achieving a familiarity with such important historical figures. In this respect, the author has succeeded in producing a novel that is, in spite of its faults, a worthwhile read. I enjoyed Downing's prose style. The book had a nice flow to it. The plot was a little plunky at times but the plunkiness was worth it. There wasn't a great climax unfortunately. The antagonism was light and therefore not as great in the end. The crown jewel of this book is that you get to meet CS Lewis, Charles Williams, and JRR Tolkein in their natural habitats. Downing does a superb job of using their writings to bring them to unique life here in this novel. It's worth the read certainly to encounter and walk with these brilliant men.

Fun read, better perhaps for teens. Highlights are the all too few scenes with the Inklings.

Enjoyed this book very much. Especially the "surprise gusts" who appear throughout the book.
