About book Wenn Du Einen Wal Sehen Willst (2013)

If You Want to See a Whale is an interesting and very short book, that gives the reader a different perspective. The thing I liked most about it was how simple it is and how quiet of a book it seems to be. When I read it, I sort of felt at peace and relaxed in a weird way because I feel like that is what the character in the book is trying to tell you to do. The book is also written in such a way where if can be repeated, almost like in a circle. The only thing that sort of bothered me was that it was hard to really understand why the book was written or if there was a point. I know that it is about keeping calm and quiet and the whale will soon approach you, but I don’t think there is a hidden message behind it. If there is, then I must have missed it. A young boy is determined to see a whale. As he waits to see the whale, he must do everything he can from getting distracted by other things. The boy knows he must not get to comfortable because he might fall asleep. Pay no attention to other animals because they are not whales. Ignore the clouds in the sky because they may be distracting to the eye. If you want to see a whale you must be patient. The medium is painted imprints hand-carved into wood blocks. The pictures do well in depicting the meaning of the story and the text from page to page. The facial expression most commonly used throughout the book is curiosity from my interpretation. The color use is mostly bright/cool colors. This book made me feel adventurous in the sense that I was placed in the boys shoes in waiting to see a whale. I felt patient as he does in the story and I was grasped and engaged in the story by the idea that he will see a whale.
