About book When You Were Older (2012)

Russell is about to leave his apartment for work in New York City when he gets a call that his mother has died suddenly. It is Sept. 11, 2001 - and Russell works on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center. His personal tragedy has saved him from a nationwide tragedy. His job and coworkers are gone in an instant. He returns to the small town in Kansas where he grew up, and is tasked with not only settling his mother's estate but also becoming the caretaker for Ben, his older but brain-damaged brother. Russell struggles to step into the caretaker roll for brother Ben, who had tormented him through his childhood. While dealing with the house and his mother's things, and trying to maintain strict structure that his brother needs, he meets a young Egyptian woman whose father owns a local bakery. Following the 9/11 attack in NYC, local Kansas residents are turning their suspicion onto the bake and his daughter. I enjoyed the characters and the plot line, but felt it really fell apart badly with the ending. It was too abrupt and too contrived. was doing my best to get out the door. And then the phone rang.I almost let it go. New York, September 11th 2001Russell Ammiano is rushing to work when he gets a phone call that saves his life. As the city he loves is hit by unimaginable tragedy, Russell must turn his back and hurry home to Kansas.Kansas, September 14th 2001Ben Ammiano is mentally disabled, and a creature of habit. Any change to his routine sends him into a spin. But now his estranged brother has reappeared, and Ben's simple, ordered world has turned upside down.In a story as heartbreaking as it is uplifting, two brothers must bury their pasts and learn from each other, if they are to survive
