About book Yaratık Avcısı (2011)

Be forewarned: This is a super-gory book and Yancey does NOT stint on detailed descriptions of disgusting stuff. Not at all my kind of thing, but SO well-written. The setting, New England in 1988, is superbly creepy and atmospheric. The odd pairing of obsessed monster-hunting doctor and his 12 year-old "orphan-apprentice" is every bit as memorable as Sherlock and Holmes. I don't necessarily want to follow them into sequel territory, but I thoroughly admire how Will Henry's stoical narration sets off this over-the-top tale to perfection. When I read "teen" books like this, I try to remind myself the first book I read outside the realm of "Baby Sitters Club" was "Flowers in the Attic". That being said, this book was fantastic. Dark and creepy with a plot line that continued to chug along. Yancey did a fantastic job of making me feel this story. Sadness for the characters, panic when necessary, and a host of other emotions, when appropriate. I'm looking forward to the second in the series.
