About book Years (1986)

An oldie, but goodie...*5+ Stars* A truly epic read! One of my all-time, unforgettable favorites!Years is a breathtaking historical romance that I have been rereading faithfully since my teen years. It was my first (mildly steamy) "adult" read, so I may be slightly biased in my opinion, but this has to be one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read.Lavyrle Spencer is an amazing storyteller who knows how to play with a reader's heartstrings. Her stories are tender, but powerful, and Years is a prime example of Spencer's writing at its finest. Please do not let the slow start of this story scare you off -- it gradually builds its way to brilliance. Linnea Brandonberg is a young but very determined heroine. She's also proper, intelligent, and graceful. When she lands a teaching position and is sent to live with the Westgaards, she is initially appalled by their seemingly barbaric behavior. However, as time passes, this eccentric family works their way into her heart, as well as mine, and honestly became one of my most beloved fictional families. Theodore Westgaard is a rough and brooding hero who offers no patience or grace in welcoming Linnea into their home. He's a busy, dedicated, hard working farmer who's not a fan of some woman occupying a man's teaching position at their local schoolhouse. The tension/bickering between these two was adorable, and you could truly feel their passion building. Although Linnea was considerably younger than Teddy, the maturity of her character far surpassed that of an average 18 year old heroine. Teddy genuinely fought his feelings for this reason, but a connection like theirs was hard to deny...and I loved watching the ice surrounding Teddy's heart slowly melt away.Although Years contains one of my most favorite love stories to date, it is far more than just a romance novel. The prominent bonds of family and friendship are heartwarming as the characters face the very intense hardships of their time—1917. There were moments that honestly and violently ripped my heart out--but many more that deeply touched my soul and propelled this story into something extraordinary. If you enjoy a slow-building romance, complimented by a heartbreaking love story that examines real life issues—AND happen to be a fan of historical fiction—do not pass this one up! It does take a bit for the story to pick up, but once it does, it has the power to hold your heart forever! Book Stats:▪t Genre/Category: Historical Romance▪t Steam Caliber: Mild▪ Romance: Slow-building. Beautiful. Passoinate.▪t Characters: Extremely well-developed. Original and lovable. ▪t Plot: Deeply layered. Heartbreakingly beautiful. ▪ Writing: Captivatiing, powerful and graceful. Expert storytelling.▪ POV: 3rd Person Perspective▪t Cliffhanger: None. Standalone.

This won't be a review, more of a rant and an outpouring of emotions. And I'm not guaranteeing that it will be coherent. The first half of the book was pretty good. Even with the immaturity of Lin, Teddy was a nice hero, and his family amazing. I was just feeling nice and smug that the hero and the heroine just got married everything was rosy and perfect, and then one damn disaster after another. The spoilers are pretty bad, just a FYI.(view spoiler)[First Teddy's brother John (whom I loved) dies in a some sort of a blizzard. The story is that Teddy and John got caught in a carriage. After Teddy realized that they couldn't survive unless something drastic happens, he makes a course of action. He killed the horses and him and his brother crawled into their skin. Now, John (who was described as slow, but a generous and kind soul), was afraid of small spaces, so he crawled out and froze to death. Then, Teddy's son Kristian decides to go to war. I was dreading the news that he died, but fortunately it didn't happen. What did happen is Spanish influenza. It took 3 memebers of Teddy's family, two of which are quite prominent throughout the book. His mother, and one of his nieces, who was also Lin's student. By that point I was sobbing. To tell you the truth I was slightly terrified of reading the book by that point, the author managed to kill off 4 people in 50 pages, but I persisted on, I wanted to know what happened to Kristian. Unfortunately, there is no news of him. We learn that the war is over, but no news about him. That was the moment when I damn near started screaming from frustration. (hide spoiler)]

Do You like book Years (1986)?

Ageless love..I was sort of put off by the beginning as it almost seemed juvenile. I put it away for a bit while I read other books and finding myself bookless I took it up again. I was so wrong! This is a lovely sweet sorrowful tale of people Lear inWhen I first began this book I found the beginning to be reminiscent of juvenile fiction and being sort of nonplussed, put it down and read other books. I went back to it though once I found myself bookless and realized what a lovely, sorrowful, hopeful story it was.. I was so impressed with the descriptions of the wedding night and the snow blizzard that I found myself tense and tearing up and hoping against all things I knew a out life that it would turn out alright. There is a depth to Teddy that experience and years have imprinted upon his soul. Lin is a simple sweet hopeful optimistic creature who brings a light to Teddy's dark pessimism. The book brings to mind literature such as Old Yellar or Of Mice and Men. A reality and strength and a simple belief in right and wrong is encouraging in this age of complexity. A romance amidst a hard life is so much more of a worthwhile story than all the Cinderella romances about catching the right rake of a duke. So happy I went back to this lovely book.

Recomendo.
