About book Yesterdays Weather (2000)

A collection of 30 portraits (short stories 10-12 pages in length), ostensibly about love, but perhaps really about how evil men are. By the third story with it's veiled threats of violence against women conjured by the sight of one with a long-since-healed throat slice, I suppose I knew what I was in for. Stories about forgiving distant and shallow men for their affairs, or else stories about getting one's (c)literal groove back through affairs. Lovely... I believe Enright has talent, and that she can aptly observe the ironies and trials of the everyday, but can't just one of her characters smile for a change? I couldn't finish these stories. Many were from Taking Pictures, which I also couldn't finish. There was something just so negative about them. None of her characters seemed at all happy, and while I understand and relate to everyday life being difficult, I also understand that there is good to life, too.

Some beautiful insight popping up here and there but overall more 'eh?' than 'yes!'
