About book Zita, La Fille De L'espace (2013)

This is adorable. Such a treat I really enjoyed this little book, and I really love that there is another one. I hope that he keeps going, perhaps 5 or more haha but that is just the person in me who loves knowing what authors are good and who I can go to when I am looking for something to read. And I might have to look up his ‘Flight’ series. Zita and her friend are playing when they find a huge crater and something with a button in the middle of it. Curious and adventurous Zita runs down to push the button much to the fear of her friend. But the button takes him and Zita has to follow after to save him. A sweet journey through space, this was a great little graphic novel for 3rd graders on up who enjoy space adventures. Both girls and boys will enjoy, girls a little more just because Zita is a girl. My only problem is always my only problem, these just aren’t long enough. I read on a blog how these graphic novels were a big hit in her class and so I bought one. I find it kind of funny when I remember a few years ago before graphic novels became popular that we looked at one and thought it was not a good idea for us to promote as teachers- they looked more like comic books and we didn't think that would be good - and now my mind has taken a complete turn- I have found more and more that the graphic novels are fun to read- I think they hold a purpose for those students who may not like to read and find they enjoy these. Do I like them more than a regular book? no- they don't have the depth that a book has, with character development etc, but they were good to read. I have found a few reluctant readers will pick the graphic novels up and start to enjoy reading and after all- that is my main goal as a teacher is to spark the interest in reading- for me I can't get enough of books- I love that people can put things down in words and make a whole new world for me to jump into. This book is about a couple of children playing together and they find an unusual object. The boy is timid and the girl is forward and despite his warnings, she punches the button and he is transported somewhere. She starts to feel guilty so she punches the button again and follows to try and find him. She meets new friends and eventually finds him and has to make a decision in order to send him home or her. It shows great ideals of friendship and kindness and she will continue on her quest to get home in upcoming books. I can see why students of 8-10 would really enjoy reading these and I hope to get a few more for my classroom.
