About book Burma Chronicles (2007)

I absolutely LOVED this read! This graphic novel is about the life and times of a cartoonist who lives in Myanmar for a year as his wife is stationed there with MSF France (Doctors Without Borders). The author gives a good picture of daily life, of the heavily censored media and the military controlled state where rumors are the best source of news. Though he went into some detail about the work of the NGO and some of the complexities of working in a country like Myanmar, I wish I had more perspective from his wife and her work also. It would have been cool to note the trials and tribulations of someone serving in the capacity of a doctor. I am kind of surprised that he title of this novel is Burma Chronicles as the people of this country call it Myanmar. The book also ends a bit abruptly with the very interesting way that ferris wheels work in Myanmar. Coincidentally, I watched Parts Unknown- Myanmar(A CNN series by Anthony Bourdain) and he covered a lot of the same interesting things about Myanmar that Delisle speaks about. It was nice to learn about this country through a documentary and a graphic novel at the same time. I definitely plan to check out his other books- this was a treat!

Do You like book Burma Chronicles (2007)?

Fantastic. Jerusalem is still the best, if only for the art, but this is a close second.
