About book Deadly Promises (2010)

Oh, anthologies. I like you because you introduce me to new authors by including ones I already like. I hate you because a lot of novelists write really bad short stories. I read this for the Laura Griffin story, and that is what the grade is based on. But that doesn't mean I have nothing else to say!Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love - Look. Paranormals that use the term "female" to refer to what is essentially a human woman get a pass because sometimes, the characters aren't technically human. It bugs me but I'll let it go. But in romantic suspense, when everyone is firmly in the human camp? Don't call me a female. I'm a woman, not a tree frog. So annoying.Cindy Gerard - It didn't bug me. I didn't love it, but I might pick up something in her series.Laura Griffin - I'm pretty sure she was the smallest name on this book, but she had the best story. I loved Kelsey - bossy, smart, and stubborn. I love that she and Gage acknowledge that being in a relationship with someone on a SEAL team is basically impossible - the stress of wondering where your partner is and what is happening to him would be nearly unbearable. Griffin manages to write a neat little mystery and a romance with a realistic happy ending. I have to admit I only read one of the stories in this book (I might go check out the others later) which was the one by Cindy Gerard. I'm currently getting my hands on everY book she's written and am almost through the Black Ops series. Loving it.This was a short story, but it certainly packed a punch. The story is of hero, Cavanagh, a CIA agent, we first met in Whisper No Lies when he helped the BOIs get out of Jakarta whilst saving Johnny Duane Reed's lady, Crystal, after she was kidnapped to be a sex slave. In this story, the heroine, Carrie, who we met in Risk No Secrets as the teenage sweetheart of Wyatt's years earlier who, after the disappointment of finding there was never going to be anything between her and Wyatt, took off to seek adventure. She found it all right. She was wrongfully convicted of a crime in Mandalay, Myanmar/Burma and sentenced to slave labour for 10 years. Wyatt knew Crystal had gone missing and called on his old friend, Cavanagh, to find and rescue her. I really enjoyed it, just as I've enjoyed all these Black Ops books. Cavanagh isn't a part of the BOIs, just a friend of Wyatt's but he fit the bill perfectly. I liked Carrie in Risk No Secrets and was happy to see her join with Cavanagh, who is every bit as resourceful and sexy as the heros of Black Ops. Together, they had great chemistry.I wouldn't mind if Gerard wrote some more of these little in between novellas.
