About book Death Whispers (2011)

I found this book to just be ok for me. It was kinda dry and boring. It really could have been so much more than it was. I also was a little confused as to what genre it actually was or if it was YA or Adult. It had some pretty 'adult' language so I am guessing the book is an adult book about young people. There were bits and pieces that were ok though.I thought the premise of the book was intriguing, I just don't feel like it was executed very well. So the story goes that kids in kindergarten were inoculated to bring forth certain talents, I felt that it was pretty much unexplained as to why this was done in the first place. And besides that everything else was pretty normal such as cars or microwaves. So my question was if they have the technology to inoculate students giving them special abilities would you not think maybe the world would have also progressed a bit further? I did find Caleb's talents and abilities to be quite intriguing. And would have liked to explore those a bit more. The ideas that the author had about these talents were all pretty good ideas and I liked reading about what each of the characters could do. I would have just liked to have known the reasoning behind it all.I also felt like the story was just not believable or relatable at all. The characters were a bit more believable but I still did not connect with any of them really. I also thought it was a bit odd that there was a love interest with middle school kids, those being Jade and Caleb, and then one forming between Jonesy and Sophia. Hello middle school really? I also did not find Caleb's parents as very realistic either. The things they allowed to go on were mind blowing to me.So while reading the book I found there was not really much action, not enough to really allow me to immerse myself into the story, and I found myself just wanting to be done with it. I also found out that there is a book 2 in the series called Death Speaks that I more than likely will not be reading. I think the 2 star rating I give this book is quite generous, but I rated as such because of the author ideas about the 'talents' of the characters. I found those ideas intriguing. dnf at 7%.I gave it a shot. but really - rolling eyes here - this starts in first person present tense, 'I am Caleb Hart' jumps to past tense jumps back to present, then past again.... There was far too much 'what I did in school today with my friends' (boring and pointless) and then we have the incident with the dog, which was totally inexplicable. The dialogue was clunky, the characters 2-dimensional and in the end I gave up. I couldn't really make sense of what was happening.
