About book Hilda E Il Gigante Di Mezzanotte (2010)

Just read this, the second volume of this great little series of children's comics, and now I’m even more enamored. This story plays with the concept of size and has the little girl protagonist experience both being a giant compared to a hidden tiny people living just outside of her house, and being tiny compared to giants walking around big as mountains. For a while it looks like the story would contain a morale of “can’t we just all get along” and then Pearson hits you with what was for me at least, a surprise ending that made the whole reading experience so much better. The story is quite evidently written so as to suit both children and adults, and again I can tell that what we have here is a classic in the making. Haven’t read that much about Pearson, but I would be very much surprised if there wasn’t a film in the near future based on these stories. Studio Ghibli would of course be perfect. So sweet. And a little scary. Blue haired Hilda makes friends with a mountain giant who has been waiting for someone for several millenia and is worried he's been stood up. At the same time, Hilda and her mother are attacked by the tiny folk who have been living invisibly around their home. There is an amazing scene where the tiny mayor's tiny cat crawls into Hilda's inviting blue hair and gives birth to kitlets. Too much. This book paves the way for a big move for Hilda and her mom.
