About book I Shouldn't Be Telling You This: Success Secrets Every Gutsy Girl Should Know (2012)

In her newest book, former Cosmopolitan Editor-in-Chief, Kate White, spills success secrets for "gutsy girls" who want to get ahead. The book is titled "I Shouldn't Be Telling You This: Success Secrets Every Gutsy Girl Should Know."I just finished this book, and I was delighted. The book is split up into three parts. Part 1 focuses on how to get the success you desire, by setting the ground and golden rule: Go Big or Go Home. This section focuses on how to figure out what you want in the first place, how to handle interviews, and basics about a workplace. Part 2, How to Go Big with Success, outlines going above and beyond, how to look and sound powerful, and how to be efficient with your goals. The third and final part focuses on how to savor success: time-management, stress relief on a crazy day, and even maternity leave when the time comes.Kate White, who is by the way a New York Times Bestselling Author, gives a straight-forward, witty and personal account of her career and how you can learn from it. This book is perfect for all ages and stages, from me, about to embark on the internship journey, to someone leaving to have a baby, to someone starting a new job, or someone shifting gears completely.White's editorial skills translate into her book, with sections and rules frequently resembling magazine headlines. They entice, inform, and inspire. And unlike a Cosmopolitan headline, they might be a bit more accurate... but can't get you anywhere in bed.Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I wanted to keep reading, I felt I learned something new in each sitting, and I wasn't bored to tears reading boring information that didn't apply to my current career. It does apply to my current career, and will apply in every step going forward as well. I bought this book because I have always had a strong ambition to do well in my career, but over the years I have found myself losing direction and purpose. I love my job, but I knew I wasn't doing it to my best ability. I'd taken a wrong turning somewhere and needed someone to set me on the right track again. And this is what Kate White did to perfection.I have to admit, I was surprised by just how valuable this book was to me. I knew Kate White would be an intelligent, ambitious woman—you don't get to the top of any game by accident—but I was surprised by just how much useful advice she shared for every stage of your career (and this applies to any career, not just one in the magazine industry, which I had feared would be the case). I took copious notes as I read, and came away with many ideas and strategies that I could directly apply to my own career, starting today. Her light, jocular writing style made the book easy to read. That said, there was no messing around. She will make you roll your sleeves up and delve right into the hard work awaiting you. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who, for whatever reason, needs a helping hand to fast-track their own career. Thanks Kate!

Lots of good tips, but nothing new and exciting. It's good to be reminded of them though.
