About book James: Mercy Triumphs (Member Book) (2011)

Last August we started a bible study on James one of the books of the bible. Beth Moore is the author of this study. For this study her daughter Melissa helped write the study. For those of you who know Beth Moore, you know what to expect in one of her studies. For those of you who don’t you are in for a treat. The structure of this study is eight weeks of homework where you learn all kinds of facts about James. These homework sessions are followed by video sessions with Beth emphasizing on a set of scriptures from that week’s homework or visiting scripture that was not in the homework. When you read the introduction of the study Beth gives you five levels for participating in the study. You can choose what is most comfortable to you.The levels are:1. Video sessions2. Video sessions plus weekly homework.3. Video sessions, weekly homework, and writing the book of James in the back pages of the book.4. Video sessions, weekly homework, writing James, reading Going Deeper.5. Video sessions, weekly homework, writing James, reading Going Deeper, and memorizing the book of James. The Next Level sections are written by Beth’s daughter and highlights a certain portion of the scripture studied that week. Melissa pulls out facts that came up in their research. My Thoughts: Another great study by Beth Moore! Very engaging! I challenge everyone to take on the weekly homework. The reading has become more as I have worked through her more recent studies. Still worth the effort of studying reading another great Beth Moore Study! I didn't "read" so much as "complete" this one, but there's still a lot of reading material to it. I really love Beth Moore's studies of an entire book of the Bible. Well, I really like it when ANYONE does that, but she has such a knack for putting together not just the book, but also the details of the person who wrote it or the historical significance of the group of people involved in the time period. This study looks at not only the words in the letter of James, but his life and the life of the early Jerusalem church, particularly the Jewish contingent. She goes through what Scripture says about him and also includes what historians and even legends have to say about the eldest half-brother of Jesus. There isn't a ton of historical information, but what there is is very intriguing.Beth Moore takes what can be a controversial book of the Bible, which many people struggle with as it seems at first glance to contradict a lot of Paul's writings, and takes us through James' heart, why he felt strongly for the poor and why actions and living out faith were so important to him. She walks us through the deep Jewish background of James and how he combines that with an even deeper level of compassion and mercy to all around him. Ultimately she reveals the man and the vision and how his words and his work in the early Church have influences well into today.4.5/5
