The book “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” by Mary Higgins Clark is a fantastic book that will keep you guessing at the end of every chapter. The novel begins in a doctor’s waiting room as Kerry McGrath patiently waits for her daughter’s stitches (from a recent car accident) to be removed. However, she feels a slight chill after she notices a familiar, beautiful face. She later comes to the conclusion that that woman has the same face as the gorgeous victim (Suzanne Reardon) of the “Sweetheart Murder,” a case that has been closed for about a decade. Kerry, as an assistant prosecutor, begins to investigate why in the world her daughter’s plastic surgeon would give women the face of his dead daughter. She teams up with an attorney named Geoffrey Dorso and realizes that the man accused for murdering Suzanne is innocent. As Kerry digs deeper into the case, she does not realize that she is putting multiple lives, including her daughter’s and her own, in future danger. My favorite character of this novel is Kerry’s ten-year-old daughter Robin. Although her life is threatened and she feels as though she is in constant danger, Robin always manages to stay calm and mature. All of the characters feel very real to me because of their in-depth descriptions and realistic qualities. Be careful, you can easily become attached to many of the characters in this breathtaking story. Furthermore, I really enjoyed how this entire novel kept me constantly at the edge of my seat; I never knew what was about to happen next. My favorite part of the book is towards the end when the true murderer of Suzanne Reardon is revealed. I can honestly say that I was sweating as I flipped through the pages, and it was extremely difficult to put the book down! Even though this book contains many positive qualities, it also has a few downfalls. The plot takes a long time to pick up, and it is not until over halfway through the novel that the real action begins. In addition, new characters are constantly added in almost every other chapter until the end. This makes the book a little harder to understand and analyze. Lastly, this novel comes to an abrupt ending that left me unsatisfied. After the true murdered reveals him/herself, the characters (that remain) move on with their lives in a single page. However, the novel does not discuss how all of their daily lives will change due to their involvement in the investigation of the murder. I gave this book a four star rating because of its fantastic suspense and well-developed characters. However, the plot drags in the first half of the book and the ending is rather unsatisfying in my opinion. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in mysteries. This is not a difficult book to read, but you surely will not be able to get its suspense out of your head!
What I Adore I would not deny the fact that Marry Higgins Clark is one of my favorite authors. I became a fan of hers after reading "Loves Music, Loves to Dance", the very first of her books that I've read. I always love how she makes every reader will not stop on reading her books. This book kept me glued to it. Never really saw the ending coming. I also like that it's even a suspense book, she incorporated some humor and romance to it. I'm even one of Kerry and Geoff's loveteam fans! Her style of who done it is the best. I always struggle on guessing who the real culprit in all her books and until now, I'm still trying. I thought this time, I would finally point out the real suspect. But was surprised how at the end of the story everything's changed and the real culprit was now being obvious. Mary Higgins never fails to amaze her fans. Suspense at its best. This is really a good read that will keep you guessing. Can not wait to read another book from hers.What I Adore the Least The plot of the story was cleverly written that makes it very interesting. So far, no dull moments encountered. But there were times that I feel that Robin, Kerry's daughter sounded more like a grown up than a 10 year old kid.Final Thoughts As always, everything written by Mary Higgins Clark has been excellent with the elements of suspense, romance and humor. Let Me Call You Sweetheart was a novel full of suspense and wonder, the kind that keeps you right on the edge of your seat until the very last page is turned. This was better than the first Mary Higgins Clark book that I have read. This is about a young girl who was the opposite of Cinderella, she had two beautiful step-sisters and she was the one less fortunate on looks. Her father was a plastic surgeon who made her into his masterpiece. He adored her so much afterwards that he became obsessed with her looks after she was murdered and he started to turn some of his patients into a mirror image of her. A young girl was in a car accident and went to him for surgery and that is when the whole story starts to unravel. The little girls mother, a prosecutor, notices two different womne leaving his office on two different days and notices the resemblance between them. She starts to unravel connections in antique theft, murders, affairs, and somehow they all seem to be connected to this doctor. It's a good story, but I have to admit, just like the first Mary Higgins Clark book I read, I figured out the "whodunnit" before the end and that was somewhat disappointing.
