The setting up of the Tantalus Club and the possibilities for its use as the backdrop to future stories is quite enticing. Diane's unconventional choice of opening a high class gaming club flies in the face of social norms and her blackmail of Oliver to get the necessary finances seems immoral yet somehow right, especially since Oliver has his own axe to grind. In Diane and Oliver, Ms. Enoch has created two equally flawed characters, who accept their shortcomings and are well matched. Lovers of ethics will take serious issue with some of the tactics employed by the h/h in getting what each wants - despite that, one feels drawn to and sympathetic for their choices. Look forward to the series. Les personnages sont assez forts. Au départ, on pense qu'il n'y pas d'espace de réconciliation tant leur animosité est forte. L'intrigue est originale puisque l'action se déroule dans une maison de jeu tenue par une femme un peu anachronique pour l'époque. Ce qui est intéressant, c'est la peinture sociologique de l'époque, particulièrement cruelle pour les femmes qui ne rentrent pas dans le schéma classique du mariage qui offre la protection sociale et économique. Plusieurs femmes du roman ont une histoire touchante, rejetées par leur famille ou par le milieu aristocratique, elles sont venues se réfugier là. On pourra notamment retrouver Camille Pryce dans "taming an impossible rogue" .
