About book Patterns In The Sand (2009)

I wish I could give this book 2.5 stars, because it was better than 2 stars, but not worthy of 3. I just never found myself getting attached to the characters. Perhaps the issue is that it was a second in a series, but usually with this kind of cozy mystery you don't necessarily need to read them in order. I won't be perusing any others in this series. It was fine, but not really anything to write home about. This is the second in the series featuring the Seaside Knitters set in eastern Massachusetts, on Cape Ann. A young woman breaks into the knitting shop and falls asleep in the display window. Soon after a local artist and art historian is found dead. The four women who are the mainstay of the knitting group set out to discover the murderer and eventually do so. The story is fleshed out with lots of gatherings around food, some information on how local arts groups operate, and maintaining friendships. There is very little mystery, though a few clues pop up every now and then, mostly one person overseeing another looking worried or having a hostile conversation. There is little feel of mystery but a strong feeling of a small community and how people work together. There is some information on knitting but not so much as to interfere with the story line. Directions are included at the end for making Chemo Caps and information on websites for donating these. This is definitely a cozy with recurring characters who are ever ready with friendship and compassion along the rocky New England coast.
