About book Piégés ! (2011)

The intensity (and body count) jumps up from previous volumes. It still kills me, though, that the survivors have yet to really develop solid strategies and tactics for dealing with the zombies. I find myself wanting to shake them often and say, "You idiot! You should be doing X!" Rick does finally start talking about some thoughts along these lines at the very end. We'll see if he can actually deliver going forward. This volume is indeed well titled - the survivors wind up in a situation that literally has no way out (and I'm using the term "literally" properly, not in the dumbified version that so many use). Rick, Carl, Glenn, Maggie, Sophia, Andrea, and Michonne have survived many attacks, including the final bloodbath with the Governor, but this time, their safe haven is compromised in a way they never expected. They also have new friends they care about - Gabriel, Morgan, and the awesome Abraham. As Glenn says, "I don't see my life after this...I just can't...picture it in my head when I think about it". Some want to fight, some want to run, others just want to hide and hope it goes away. Mistakes are made with horrible consequences. The artwork is excellent here, particularly in a two page panel just a few pages from the end. There are some other good panels, including a few narrow vertical ones that remind me of a row of bookmarks showing simultaneous vignettes of the action. Combine it with Rick's big revelation about this new world they live in, and a touching scene between Morgan and Carl in which Morgan is able to comfort Carl in a way Rick never can. This volume is a true highlight of this series.
