I just couldn't connect with the characters. I kept wanting to feel engaged and wanting to like it but it never happened. The style of writing didn't work for me. Reading this book is like watching a movie where all the colours are washed out and grey. the feel of the locations were very well done in that I always had a clear image of the landscape and the 'feel' of where the characters were.I think part of the problem was the lack of strong secondary characters. Pete was 'meh' and because she understood Jack so little, we as readers didn't really get him either. Beyond those two there are really only fleeting mentions of other characters and they are almost meaningless.However, I will say that it was good enough to finish and as I'm a serial DNF'er that does say something. Street Magic has a bleak, gothic atmosphere, and features a heroine addicted wizard as the hero and a troubled detective as the heroine. The author does a good job of creating an alternate reality for the magical realm and the fey creatures who inhabit that world. However, I found the London dialect and punk slang hard (and sometimes impossible) to understand, and the author didn't drop in enough information at the right points for me to fully follow what was going on. I was interested enough in the characters to finish reading the story to find out what happened to them, but I don't feel compelled to pick up the next book in the series.
