About book Survivants - 1916 : Attaques Du Requin (2000)

"I survived the shark attacks of 1916" by Lauren Tarshis was a very simple book. This book was a very quick read. It only took me a total of around two days to read the whole thing (quick for me). The book had a very quick and easy story to pick up on and I liked the characters. This book also helps you understand what people were like during the time period. It stated that there were no marine biologists back then so that's why there was little knowledge about sharks and their habits. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes quick reads and sharks In a small town in New Jersey a boy named Chet Roscow becomes fascinated with stories about a Greta white shark killing people up and down the coast of the atlantic and wants to learn more. But to CHet's surprise he learns way too much and finds out the the shark is in the local river close to their town that evryone swims in. One day after Chet plays a prank on his buddies they all were swimming in the river except Chet. When suddenly a shark fin appears and Chet dives in to save his friend that was frozen with fear. He gets his friend to safety but ends up getting bitten by the shark. But he becomes a local hero and the shark was caught and destroyed to keep it from hurting other people. An activity I would have the students do for this is put themselves in Chet's shoes and be able to write about if they would have done the same thing Chet did for his friend in that situation why or why not.
