About book The Lady Most Likely...: A Novel In Three Parts (2010)

The book’s biggest enemy was its format. At best, it left me wanting more after a too-short story; at worst, it threw me overly simplified characters and a barely cobbled-together plot. All three of the authors would have been better off more fully developing each of their plots and characters. That said, the first part of this book was delightful. I really enjoyed the repartee, I liked the conflict with Alec's sister, and I found Gwendolyn’s character to be unique and likeable. It was just much too rushed to run through the whole story in so few pages and over the span of only two days. Sadly, the next two stories barely grabbed my interest. Hugh is an Earl but he is more interested in training horses than in being a proper gentleman. That is, until a fall from his horse knocks him out for a week, leading him to ask his younger sister for a list of potential brides. His sister delivers a list and throws a house party to gather up a bunch of the eligible young folk for some matchmaking fun. There are three separate romances here, each written by a different author, but the book still flows well from one part to the next as Hugh's potential brides are claimed by alternate suitors, one after the other. There are no real surprises here in how the matches line up or in that everyone lives happily ever after but the stories are well written and the characters are enjoyable. Eloisa James has been my favorite romance writer for a while and I'm glad to have Julia Quinn and Connie Brockway on my radar now as well.
