About book The Sleeping Dictionary (2013)

A cross between a Bronte novel and Cinderella, but without a richness of language and description. There was a very engaging storyline with a thin but interesting backdrop about Indian political history and independence. In reading novels set in other countries, I like to understand more about the culture and this was glossed over except for an obvious fascination with food. It was no Thousand Splendid Suns but an entertaining read. Fantastic, beautiful book. Loved it. Heartbreaking in a lot of areas but still the main character has a lot of hope and faith in humanity still despite how many people throughout her childhood have used her. It's set in 1930s -1940s India and the main character's struggle with identity and freedom mirrors India's identity and struggle freedom going on at the same time. I wish I could go into more detail because the author is a very strong writer. Beautiful images and great characters. It's the type of the story that stays with you for a long time.
