**Some spoilers**i'm torn on this one. I generally love historical fiction in foreign settings. And I was really enjoying this until about the last quarter. I started getting really annoyed with how naive and self centered Kamala was, particularly where it involved her daughter. And it all wrapped up at the end a little too nearly and quickly. She lied to so many people about everything, when it came to self-preservation in the literal sense I understood it. But eventually it didn't feel that way and her husband was far too understanding, in my opinion. Until the last quarter Id have given it 4 stars. An amazingly well written book!! I got hooked onto it by the very first sentence "You ask for my name, the real one, and I cannot tell." Phew!! Its story of a girl's survival and love and beliefs set in 1930-1947. The author's words paint a vivid picture in my head regarding the life people in Calcutta and of the boarding school in Midnapore. The writing is rich and I love it how effortlessly the author reflects Pom/Kamala's struggle for freedom and independence along with India's struggle for freedom from the Britishers. Simply put: I LOVED the book!!!
