About book The Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie (2009)

_The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie_ is a perfectly intriguing mystery of the old fashioned sort, set in the small English village Bishop's Lacey in the summer of 1950. Its main character, nearly 11-year-old Flavia de Luce, has a solid knowledge of chemistry and a passion for poisons. It all begins one day when a dead bird turns up on the back doorstep of her family manor, Buckshaw. Impaled upon its beak is a rare stamp. That evening, Flavia hears her father, an avid stamp collector, arguing with a stranger in his study. Very early the next morning, Flavia discovers the dying stranger in the cucumber patch. Her father is eventually arrested under suspicion of murder and Flavia sets out, using reason, deduction, and plain-old snoopery, to solve the mystery and clear his name. I wanted to enjoy the book, I really did. However, it did not live up to my expectations. The main character was highly irritating, and some of the book was like reading a chemistry text book. I found it quite obvious who had committed the murder, but some of the story line, particularly towards the end, was just unbelievable and quite far fetched. I didn't feel any connection with any of the characters, and I didn't feel the story connected with its readers at all. I will try the second book, just to be fair, and am hoping for better things than in the first.
