About book The Crown Conspiracy (2008)

This is officially my new favorite series. I loved the adventure, suspense, banter & history. The plot was well written & interesting. I loved both Hadrian & Royce. Even Alric & his sister grew on me. I think I'm just a sucker for books with new worlds & history in them like game of thrones & such books. I know my review isn't much but I feel like I can't express well how much I really liked this book & that's saying something. I'm afraid I only got 2/3 of the way into this book. I stopped when I realised I was just skipping page after page to see whether anything interesting might happen. The writing felt terribly flat. It seemed like the literary equivalent of a bad made-for-TV film. The plot doesn't have much to recommend it. The characters were the worst parts of the book. They were stereotypical cardboard cut-outs and I felt zero empathy with any of them. I can understand some people wanting a light fantasy read - I like reading a David Gemmell occasionally. However, the writing, plot and characterisation here are plain bad.
